The multiplication of loaves is one of the greatest signs and miracles worked by Jesus. Reported by all the evangelists, the early Church attached great importance to this episode. It is the fourth sign recorded by John at the beginning of the ministry of Jesus. In the gospel passage of our reflection, the Lord Jesus feeds five thousand people with only five barley loaves and two fish. This miracle, itself, seems to be a remake of Elisha’s miracle mentioned in the first reading (cf 2 Kings 4:42-44), but it is more than that. In that episode, Elisha fed about one hundred people with only twenty barley loaves. But in this case, Jesus actually feeds a crowd which is more than five thousand people. This is the Son of God who created the universe out of nothing. What is the significance of these miracles? What challenge does it give us today?
