Photo: What are the seven sorrows of Mary?

The seven sorrows are

(1) the prophecy of Simeon,

(2) the flight into Egypt,

(3) the loss of the child Jesus in the Temple,

(4) Mary meets Jesus on the Way of the Cross,

(5) the crucifixion of Jesus,

(6) Mary receives the body of Jesus taken down from the cross and

(7) the burial of Jesus.

There is a rosary of the seven sorrows of Mary -

three beads and a crucifix with seven groups of seven beads.

You pray this rosary by beginning with three Hail Marys in memory of the tears Mary shed because of Jesus’ suffering, praying to obtain the true sorrow for your sins.

Then you say the Hail Mary on each of the groups of beads while recalling the sorrows of Mary.

The rosary concludes with the versicle,

“Pray for us, O most sorrowful Virgin”,

and the response,

“That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ”.
