Spaniard St. Ignatius of Loyola founded the
Society of Jesus in 1548, with the goal of
establishing a group of men under the Pope's
service to go where they were needed.
As with other religious orders they take a
vow of poverty, chastity and obedience. But
the Jesuits add a fourth, to serve the Pope,
whomever it may be.
