Mother Mary stands as a role model for the entire humanity in doing God’s will in our daily life. In the beginning of her vocation to God’s invitation to be the Mother of Saviour, she said ‘yes’ and remained faithful to that ‘yes’ till the end of her life. The consequences of saying ‘yes’ had many implications. She became a faithful disciple of Jesus throughout Jesus’ ministry. She had to go through hard realities when her son faced opposition from the Pharisees, scribes and the elders of the Jewish community. She also participated in the ministry of her son. Finally she journeyed with her Son till the crucifixion at Calvary.
When we pray and keep on praying, our ‘yes’ moves in
the direction of Mother Mary’s yes. Our likes and dislikes, our selfish
desires, our fears and prejudices, are some of the factors that full us in the
opposite direction. And so we too have to struggle to say yes in prayer and to
live it out generously and uncompromisingly.
Saying yes means committing ourselves to all that
Mary stood for: love, truth, justice, life, human dignity. This would include loving those who do not
love us, standing for truth and justice even when it costs us, taking sides
with the oppressed, respecting the other human beings, helping others in their
need. Only in our saying ‘yes’ God can continue his saving work in our
world. In saying ‘yes’ in our life and
living it, we joyfully experience how this power triumphs in our weakness. When
we say ‘yes’ to God, we say ‘yes’ to all the difficulties that come in our life
when we do good work in our life. Therefore let us pray with Mother Mary, that
she may strengthen us in our Christian commitment to Christ.
We
come to you mother of our Lord and mother of us all, to thank you for your yes
that gave us incarnation of God’s own yes and brought life to its fullness. We
ask you; teach us to follow you in saying our yes in faith and courage. You
know the cost of living ‘yes’; protect us in integrity and joy. Ask your divine
Son for the grace always to repeat our yes with an ever growing surrender, and
to experience how this increases the meaningfulness of our life. Under your
inspiration, may we help to build the kingdom of God. Amen.
